What is a "Research Reserve"?

The National Estuarine Research Reserve System (NERR) was established in 1972 under the Coastal Zone Management Act and is administered within the Estuarine Reserves Division of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA). There are currently 27 NERR sites in the United States, encompassing more than one million acres of estuarine habitat in a wide-variety of biogeographic regions. The mission of the Reserves is to promote informed management through linked programs of research, education and land management. Each Reserve is built on a foundation of ongoing partnerships with state, federal and local authorities. Issues of national priority include nonpoint source pollution, habitat restoration, maintenance of biodiversity and control of invasive species, and sustaining estuarine ecosystems.
